CPF Volunteer Aubrey Kimble

Why did you choose to volunteer in Carmen Pampa?

I’m serving a two-year term as a Franciscan missioner with Franciscan Mission Service. My organization has been collaborating with the College since 1998 in a variety of capacities: supporting campus ministry, teaching English, and providing technical assistance to the UAC-CP’s productive centers, to name a few. As a missioner, I was immediately drawn to the College’s mission of service. And, as a recent college graduate, issues of college access were close to my heart.

What professional experiences prepared you for your work as an English teacher at the College?

I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, where I double majored in Economics and Spanish Literature. As you would imagine, I spent lots of time in language classrooms throughout college and learned a good deal about best practices in language education. I also spent a semester abroad in Seville, Spain, where I volunteered as an English tutor at a local middle school.

What surprised you most about your experience living and working in Carmen Pampa?

I didn’t expect Carmen Pampa to be such an incredibly welcoming and loving community. From students to administrators, everyone constantly goes out of their way to get to know all of the volunteers (even though so many of us are always coming and going!) I truly feel like I belong here.

What advice do you have for others who are thinking about working as a Professional Visitor in Carmen Pampa?

This is a one-of-a-kind experience that I wish everyone could have. Of course, there have been many challenges and frustrations in my work at the UAC-CP. But I have grown immensely and have loved my time here. Be willing to work hard, let frustrations roll off your back, and join a loving community of learners.
